Merette Uiterwaal

Merette Uiterwaal (1990, Amsterdam-Zuidoost) is an artist who primarily works with photography. Her color blindness gives her an unconventional view of the world compared to most people. Interested in the simplicity of everyday life, she explores the interpretations of color in common subjects. In her work, she often uses blurriness in the photographs to stimulate the imagination and encourage the viewer to focus on the image without the distraction of details. The blur also serves as a visual reference to her altered perception of color. It disrupts the image in the same way her sight of reality is disturbed by color blindness.
The series “Untitled (Colors)” (2023) is a captivating collection of photos featuring abstract yet familiar flowers and plants. Each artwork delves into the exploration of perceiving and discovering colors, with an emphasis on the difference between the reality of the photographer as a colorblind individual and that of individuals with normal color vision. The titles of the pieces refer to the colors she perceives, creating a unique palette that often deviates from the conventional understanding of reality.
This interplay between her distinctive perspective and the viewer’s perception leads to artworks that challenge established ways of perceiving color. The series beautifully blurs the line between realism and abstraction, inviting the audience into a visually engaging experience. The photographs not only reveal the inherent beauty of nature but also provoke contemplation about the subjective nature of color, fostering a deeper appreciation for the diversity of visual experiences.
