Early work
In 1940 Corneille moved to Amsterdam where he followed a drawing- and etching course at the Rijksacademie voor Beeldende Kunsten. However, as a painter Corneille remained autodidact. His biggest inspiration were the journeys he made. In his early work, which he made during the ‘50s, Africa was a great inspiration. In the early ‘60s this shifted to Central America and the Caribbean. This shift is reflected in the bright colours he used in those works, which have much in common with the native cultures he saw during his journeys in that region. Women, cats and birds have been a great fascination for Corneille. They are, whether or not in combination with each other, often present in his paintings.
CoBrA
Along with Karel Appel and Constant he founded the Dutch Experimental Group in 1948. The group later represented the Dutch department of the CoBrA group, which was established in Paris. The group only existed for three years, but even today the group is still influential and known by a large number of people.
In 1950 Corneille moved to Paris. He continues to travel around the world, but Paris remains his home. The work of Corneille is known in many countries. Nowadays his works are also used for the designs of for instance watches, bags and ties. Because of this, the work of the artist is also made available for a younger audience.
