The body of work of Cobbaert consists of a variety of types of artworks. His works are made up out of an assortment of art movements, such as the second Latemse School and the CoBrA movement. Still his work mainly consists of two components. Firstly, there is his refined craftmanship. Secondly, his psychological and emotional events determined his oeuvre. The death of his son plays an important role in this. He launched himself in the dreamworld of a child. Through this fantastical world he wants to preserve some sort of contact with his son. this component his very detrimental for his work.

Around 1950 he first is introduced to the CoBrA movement, where he formally didn't want to be part of. He felt instinctively that his work was connected to the expressive imagery of the movement, with the characteristics of childrens drawings. Drawing, form, colour and subtance shape one compositional whole. The form is purposely stripped of any disturbing and estheric details.
