Eugène Brands was born on January 15, 1993 in Amsterdam. From 1931 till 1934 he attended the Amsterdamse Kunstnijverheidsschool, educated in advertising design. After having worked as an advertising designer at various advertising agencies for several months, he chose for become a visual artist. In this sense you could say he is a self-taught artist.

In 1948 he joined the Dutch experimental group REFLEX, that later on, according to several artists, turned into CoBrA. His meeting of Willem Sandberg, former director of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, led to the exhibition in 1949 where CoBrA was presented for the first time. Brands leaves the CoBrA movement a year after establishing the movement in 1949, to for the next ten years retreat to his studio and let him be inspired by 'the world of the child'. He discovers a new technique for this, more specifically oil on paper.
