Machiel Hopman (1928-2001) was a Dutch artist, born in The Hague, who has frequently worked in South-Africa. He has also worked under the synonym: Nzama.
In the seventies he became interested in the Mystique of the black population. He brings to life old mythical stories through his art and signs it with the name Nzama.

In the seventies he became interested in the Mystique of the black population. He brings to life old mythical stories through his art and signs it with the name Nzama. The work of Nzama was being discovered world wide, including his motherland The Netherlands.
Until opproximately 1978 Hopman kept signing with the name Nzama, but afterwards he started using his own name. Characteristic for his work is that both for Hopman and Nzama the black population is a recurring subject matter that is portrayed with power and pride.
