Miriam Slaats is an artist of international standing. Her artwork is authentic, intense, strong and dynamic. The paintings are both light-hearted and profound, directly reach the essence of things. These layers represents her own development and the process of being an artist. In 1988 Slaats completed her education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Maastricht (Holland). Her studio/atelier is situated on a canal in a historic town not for from Amsterdam. Almost every day she works there passionately on her paintings. Her suitcases are always stand-by next to her easel, because Slaats is a cosmopolitan. She things of the world as her homeland and she travels a lot to paint.
Themes
Slaats communicates not only with paint, but also with words. Each of her titles is pure poetry. Sometimes she even puts the title within the image. Surrender, devotion, redemption, justice, mystery, love and happiness; all these themes are part of the artwork. Her paintings appeal imagination, dreams and desires. The works are a human quest for harmony and peace within the universe.
Inspired artist
Miriam Slaats is an inspired artist. You’ll never see her pacing in her studio, thinking about new artistic ideas and waiting for the arrival of the muses. Every morning Slaats puts on her white overall and puts on a CD with music that suits her mood. From that moment she works long hours, intense and sometimes even euphoric. Her studio is a feast for the art lover. Order dominates and yet there are all kinds of objects scattered throughout the studio. The space is filled with sunshine and whenever Slaats is nearby, the world seems to go dancing!
Development
Her optimistic nature and structural lightness are sincere, but they only show one side of the story. Slaats also shows other aspects of philosophy in her work. Therefor fascinating perspectives occur in her artwork. In her early work, there were a lot of cheerful, bright and clear colours. Later she showed more earthly tones such as ocher, brown and grey with accents of silver and gold. Her most recent work is characterized by bright colours that have been created by several layers. There are subtle nuances and free brushstrokes that form less of a frame for the shapes in her paintings. This makes the image more abstract. Slaats adds paper elements such as magazine pictures, books and newspapers to her artwork. This leads to fascinating collage techniques that astonish and invite the viewer to look closer.
The work of Miriam Slaats is exhibited in renowned galleries in Holland and abroad. Everywhere her paintings are appreciated!
