During the first period, the woman is central to his work. In the second period, his travels to Indonesia and Malaysia were his source of inspiration. During the third, and present, period, his works have the theme of the Dutch landscape. These three periods illustrate a development of the artist, who has made few or no sketches during his travels. Smeets stores his impressions in his memory and reproduces them on canvas or paper in his studio. His artworks are achieved in three phases: experience becomes memory, memory becomes a dream, and a dream becomes matter expressed in paint and colour.
