Technique
Besides his drawings and paintings, Montyn decided in 1959 to focus on etching. He preferred to work with mixed etching techniques, such as drypoint, aquatint and taille-douce. He applied these techniques on zinc plates. A method Montyn invented himself, is printing multiple etchings on one large plate. He always printed his creations himself, in small editions. He doesn’t only applied graphics as a way to multiple an image, but also as a medium to creates his own style. He made most of his etching experiments without colour, but gradually colour became part of his artwork. Colour, form, shapes and subject are put together to form an abstract image.
Style
Stylistically the artwork of Montyn can’t be categorized. His early work is more traditional and realistic, but in the sixties he began to use a more abstract imagery, full of signs and symbols. The main theme in his work is landscape. The landscape isn’t shown pictorial, but the projection of human emotions. His connection with the landscape and with the earth shows in his preference for the colour umber that symbolizes the earth.
