Simona Vergani is an Italian-born artist based in Delft. She obtained her education at the Brera Accademia di Belle Arti in Milan, followed by her studies at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunst. Vergani's artistic practice centers on sculpture, with a fascination for the interplay of materials and textures. Her earlier work primarily involved the creation of bronze sculptures inspired by narratives. However, her focus later shifted to exploring the expressive possibilities of other materials such as ceramics and wood. This transition has paved the way for a vibrant new direction in her work, in which the use of color takes center stage.
Vergani's current artistic investigation revolves around the evocative power of color itself. She moves away from the narrative elements of her earlier work and creates evocative landscapes entirely through the use of color in its most abstract form. The artist says, “Landscapes that attract me the most are those that give the sound of silence, unlimited, perennial. A desert of rocks. Stones, which are also particles of light or meteors or clouds, punctuate the space.”
This vision of escape, perspective, and nature is encapsulated in her "Landscapes Made of Wood" series. Inspired by the wonders of light, color, and the intricacies of the horizon, each piece seeks to order the chaos of impressions into a harmonious composition, reminiscent of a meticulously crafted Zen Garden. The influence of Renaissance landscapes, particularly the sense of space and simplicity in the works of Paolo Uccello and Piero Della Francesca, is also evident. Vergani meticulously sculpts each piece, starting with organic shapes in relief, to create a sense of rhythm and visual flow within the space. Color, itself a language in her work, plays a pivotal role. Pink serves as a foundational hue, imbuing the artworks with luminosity and depth. Reflecting light onto the surrounding walls, the pink hues create an ethereal aura, enhancing the poetic essence of each landscape.
