Laura Maria Hamstra is a Dutch artist with a background in couture. Ever since she was a young child, creating has been a guiding force in her life, whether it was clothes for her dolls or tunes on the piano. After studying at the Amsterdam Fashion Institute, she began her career as an assistant designer to couturier Jan Taminiau, where she fell in love with couture craftsmanship. “The endless devotion to a meticulous process and deep respect for materials captured me and haven’t let go since.”
Moving forward and creating her own couture collection led to a new path. The desire to apply the same techniques and materials in a broader context grew. “My moment of thrill was never the show, but the magical moment when a creation is finalized. It’s when you can step back, calmly gaze at it, and realize that what started as an image in your mind has been birthed into reality.” This ability to calmly gaze brought about a transition from gowns to textile wall pieces, crafted with rich texture and refined skill, creating couture for everyday surroundings.
